Marnus Labuschagne to Indian players sledging him during World Cup final: ‘I actually can’t hear what you’re saying over the crowd’

Marnus Labuschagne is sure. Walking out to bat at a popping Narendra Modi Stadium with Australia three wickets down for 47 in the World Cup final is a feeling he won’t ever forget.

In his latest newsletter titled ‘My World Cup Final Wrap’, the Aussie number four went on to share some snippets on the atmosphere in Ahmedabad after India nabbed early wickets and looked in the game on Sunday, and how he copped with the same.

“It was so loud and the wave of momentum India had was immense. The Indian team were getting into me and all I could say back, and very truthfully at that, was ‘I actually can’t hear what you’re saying over the crowd’,” Labuschagne conceded. “On this bus ride to the ground, there was fans lining the streets from about 5km out. It was amazing to see the fans get behind the game like they did.”

If anything, the loud atmosphere helped the five-time champions to add a sixth world title. “A sea of blue in the crowd. Chills as the anthem plays.. a real ‘us vs. the world’ feeling. The underdog spirit we love.”

The 29-year-old went on to add 192 runs for the fourth wicket alongside Travis Head as Australia emerged victorious by six wickets – the foundation for which was laid by the bowlers restricting India for 240. A performance that had led to the Motera crowd going silent.

Festive offer

“Standing in the middle of a giant stadium with 130,000 fans in it who all went silent at this moment. We all just stood in the team huddle and took it in for a moment,” Labuschagne said of the ambiance around the venue after Virat Kohli’s dismissal.

However, it’s the wicket of the Indian captain Rohit Sharma that Labuschagne puts as a pivotal moment in the game. Despite the loss of Shubman Gill in the powerplay, Rohit had delivered anotherone of his classic quickfire starts at this tournament – 47 off 31 before he miscued one over the infield on the off side only for Travis Head to nab him. “It was huge in the context of the game. For Maxi to throw it up like he did and tempt Rohit into the shot, and then Heady to take this grab. It was massive.”
